Welcome. I am an award winning photographer with over 25 years experience shooting high-quality work for regional and national newspapers and magazines. I specialise in editorial, publicity / PR and commercial photography based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and covering the North East counties of Northumberland, County Durham and North Yorkshire. But I will happily travel anywhere in the UK.
A career working for newspapers has allowed me to shoot a vast range of subjects in all kinds of situations, granting me a breadth of knowledge, experience and flexibility. It also gives me the insight and contacts within the industry, necessary to deliver imaginative pictures that publications want to publish.
I shoot using professional Canon EOS digital SLR camera equipment, combined with versatile wireless strobe lighting setups or powerful Elinchrom portable battery ‘studio’ flash.
All work is processed using colour calibrated Apple computers, and the photos can be delivered in a range of formats, or transmitted from almost anywhere.
A brief history
The photography bug really kicked in when I was 14 when my dad gave me a second-hand Russian 35mm SLR camera that appeared to be carved from a solid lump of brass, and was just as sophisticated. But it was a brilliant tool for learning the basic concepts of photography.
From there my enthusiasm grew, my gear improved, and I was spending all my school holidays working alongside two fantastic photographers at the district office of the Eastern Daily Press near my home in Norfolk. Fantastic times; I was also given free film and the run of their darkroom – excellent!
I then went on to Sheffield for the full-time photo-journalism course run by the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) the only course officially recognised within the industry. I graduated with a ‘Distinction’.
My first job was as a trainee back with the Eastern Daily Press / Eastern Evening News based at their Norwich head office. From there I moved to an expanding press agency in Norwich, supplying feature style photographs for the national broadsheets, magazines and corporate clients. Then it was down to the south coast for a few years at The News in Portsmouth.
Itchy feet lead me to spend 6 months trekking and travelling around New Zealand. An absolute dream.
The newspaper industry entered an era of turmoil, and I decided it was time to take a ‘leap of faith’ and go it alone, as a freelance photographer. Interesting times ahead.
